Frodsham Station Project

NCRUG started work to improve Frodsham station in 2001. Soon afterwards, the group was invited to contribute to Frodsham’s entry into the North West in Bloom competition as an example of community involvement. Subsequently Frodsham won the small town section at its first attempt and as a result Vale Royal BC, and more recently, Cheshire West and Chester have supplied summer and winter bedding plants.

Over the years, NCRUG has been involved with two art projects with the former Frodsham High School and in 2010 three students from Helsby High School worked with NCRUG to restore a garden on the north side of the old station master’s house to fulfil the volunteering element of their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. Two of these projects were supported by the High Sheriff of Cheshire’s Crimebeat fund.

NCRUG worked closely with Network Rail during the restoration of the station house in 2012. On 21st July 2012 Network Rail agreed to open the house so that rail enthusiasts and the local community could see and hear how the house restoration had been executed  Liaison between NCRUG and Network Rail also resulted in the refurbishment of the heritage fencing. NCRUG subsequently raised funds replace inappropriate wood and wire fencing with replica traditional panels.

Frodsham has won an award in the Cheshire Best Kept Station competition every year since 2005 and was declared the overall winner in both 2014 (award made in January 2015) and 2011.

Meanwhile efforts are being made with an entry in the Association of Community Rail Partnership (ACoRP) awards for 2015 and to this end the station gardens are being worked on in June 2015 with generous flower donations from Chester West & Cheshire.

In 2013, NCRUG and partners won first prize in the new uses for old buildings category at the ACORP Community Awards event, for the restoration and new use of Frodsham Station House. Our efforts have been well rewarded over the years.

Involvement with the Theatre in the Quarter Group from Chester also saw a World War 1 (WW1) Commemorative event take place at the Station as it did at over forty other railway stations across Cheshire (and elsewhere) during September 2014.
